Leaving ESPN behind…

I’ll try not and belabor the point, however, I wanted to say some things about ESPN and Penn State.

I don’t disagree that Joe Paterno should have done more, he has said that himself. I think that it was time that Joe step down, and the retirement at the end of the season sufficed. However, ESPN went after Penn State and Joe with abandon, only to find out that ESPN was sitting on a tape that they say they couldn’t corroborate, so they didn’t turn it into the police.

At the behest of another PSU alum, and a friend, I wrote and complained. I received an email and was pointed to a blog post on ESPN.com about their reasons for not coming forward. It was lame.  I found this comment and many more like it in the comment section. (This is not me)

“Let me get this straight. ESPN is saying that if Joe Paterno had been a journalist, his actions would have been considered completely acceptable. Paterno had no real knowledge of the abuse, was told by a single person who’s story could not be confirmed by a third party, and did not go to police with potential evidence that at the time he didn’t believe was creditable enough to report. But Joe wasn’t a journalist, so he got crucified for it.”

If they were doing an investigative piece or not, they should have done more. So let me drag their name through the mud, well, yeah like my little piece here will do anything. So I  sent this reply:

“I’m sorry, but I went to your link. The explanation is weak, and my thoughts are pretty much in line with most of the people that commented on the blog post. Due to your failures, I will no longer be frequenting your pages, nor will I subscribe or use your cable stations, when I have the chance. Not to mention, I will avoid ABC or Disney if at all possible, as well.”

So there it is. ESPN (ABC or Disney) you are no longer welcome here. My own personal boycott.

I Hope I’m Wrong

I hope I’m wrong, but I’m getting the feeling that the downfall of the team is about to happen. As much as the school trustees tried to right the ship by firing the president and the football coach. The sports program is now toxic. One sports program that I listen to and the PSU blogs have noted that some of the recruits have already begun to de-commit from the football program. I think that it will be difficult for the incoming coach to recruit for the next 5 years or so. This will probably the last winning season we will see for some time.  There is much damage done.

Update: We got into the Ticket City Bowl! One Defensive player was passed over as an All American for one organization as well.

It Adds a Precedent, but Is It Worth It?

It looks like Jim Tressel will sit out the first 6 weeks of the NFL season before he can help the coaching staff. The reason?

The question is, What constitutes an appropriate action? Tressel broke NCAA rules and lost his job as head coach at Ohio state, but when did it become the NFL’s job to punish people for breaking NCAA rules?

The answer to that question is that it became the NFL’s job when the NFL decided to suspend Tressel’s old quarterback, Terrelle Pryor, for the first five games of this season — the same number of games Pryor was initially suspended for the start of Ohio State’s season, before he ultimately left Ohio State and entered the NFL’s supplemental draft.

Read the rest here. Did we need to sit either of them? They broke the rules in the NCAA, not the NFL, but they both have to sit out several games for what happened in the college level. Not sure that we need that.

What it takes to have a cold pizza experience…

Pizza
Most times after midnights, I have trouble sleeping. I can feel tired by 10 pm, but by 330 am or 400 am. I’ll wake up and can’t get back to sleep. I often have to leave bed and find things to do around the house that won’t wake up the rest of the house, like type goofy blog posts about cold pizza.

So this round of mids was no different. The last two nights, I have awoken at 330am and can’t back to sleep. Tonight, I walked downstairs, wrote some in my journal, and got a piece of cold pizza.

I love cold pizza. I love a lot of left overs cold, but there is something about a good piece of cold pizza for the morning. Upon thinking about this, I have come up with the main reason for a great piece. I think it has to do with the quantity of the sauce.

To me, a great pizza has a balance of cheese, sauce, and other toppings, but for a great slice of cold pizza, the sauce must be there in sufficent force to give that slimy, wet, cold texture that my mouth craves in the wee hours of the morning. If there isn’t enough sauce, then the cheese and crust will make for a dry experience that will do no one  less than a stellar performance. So far, this BC Pizza Extra Large Extra Pepporoni we got with a coupon is one of the best. The cold sauce squishes out from beneath the cheese when you bite into it, unleashing the lubricant that allows your mouth to chew on it.

That’s one of the problems with cold pizza, the crust is cold and almost dry. I have been known to get a jar of Ragu Pizza Quick sauce, refirgerated of course, and dump it on the offending dry piece. While the cheese helps a bit, it is the sauce that makes the experience. I like BC’s seasoning in the sauce, so that is never an issue. The issue is always the quantity. I have had others, store bought self rising, too dry. Pizza Hut does a great job at quantity of sauce. Jet’s has had some good pieces too. However, nothing beats the one I’m having right now…

Jeff, why do you care so much about Christchurch?

Back in 1994, I went to the South Pole. For the Antarctic program, the jump off point for McMurdo and South Pole stations is Christchurch, New Zealand. While I pretty much was contained to the south island while I was there, I fell in love with the country. Now, 15+ years later, after passing through the city of Christchurch and portions of the south island 4 times, 2 major earthquakes have rocked the city. The first one did some damage as it was a little farther away and it was deep. However, this one, while weaker than the first one in September of last year, was much closer and shallower, and with the weakened state of many of the buildings, there were many more that came down in the City Centre. This has been a rather said event as the landmark cathedral in the town square lost its spire. The town, from what I can see will never be the same again.

Wait a minute!? I thought the Dems were supposed to increase government pay

Follow this link and you will see a just released story about how the President is proposing a freeze on federal pay. I don’t have a problem with that. However, I find it funny that there have been those that I work with in the past, who vote Dem for pay raises and not Rep. When the opposite has happened in recent memory. That’s why I’m an independent. Neither party interests me.

Some good advice

I saw on one of my social media/internet blogs GigaOm that the founder of Pandora was interviewed about how they have done as well as they have since there start up. There are a couple of videos of the interview.

Lessons Learned:

  1. Set-up your life professionally, personally and physically for a long time. You have to make it sustainable and not drive into a wall.
  2. Don’t be self conscious about being an entrepreneur.
  3. Entrepreneurs in their core team need a sales person. Someone who can tell the story and inspire people and get pulses racing because of your idea.

I don’t know if Mr. Westergren is a Christian, and it doesn’t really matter. What I thought was interesting is that the lessons learned are true, and may be biblical. #2 certainly is with the thought that Matthew 6:25 is the verse that is brought to mind. I’m pretty sure that if you search, you’ll find the other too as well.

I’ll update the post when I get a chance to search for the others.

Trying out a new service for my stuff

I’m looking at using Posterous for posting things here and then sending it to all of my social media sites. I can send stuff by email and have it show up here or on any of my sites, like Ministry and Meteorology? Blog. So let’s see whay happens when I push publish.

Wish I Could Write More

IndecisionI’m always finding that I wish I could write more and expand on some thoughts that I tend to tweet or FB to everyone. The problem is that it becomes increasing more difficult for me to set aside the time to sit and write the post. One problem is that after staring at the computer for 8+ hours at work, one of the last things that I want to do is sit in front of the computer again and work on a post. Next is the subject matter. I’m am finding that I walk a line at times with the subjects of what I can write about. I know that you can’t please everyone all the time, but there are times when the things that I would want to write about could ruffle the feathers of a few people that I am close to. Then there are the technical problems with the computers in the house.
